Event Description

Dr. Bray will begin this presentation with an overview of phonology processing and then focus on phonemic awareness, a skill not limited to the needs of young children. Dr. Bray concurs with researcher Marilyn Jager Adams: “Faced with an alphabetic script, children’s levels of phonemic awareness may be the single most powerful determinant of their success—or failure—in learning to read.” Learn why phonemes are the raw material from which literacy is woven. Learn how phonemic awareness is linked closely to the alphabetic code. Engage in multi sensory classroom activities to teach phonemic awareness that you can apply easily tomorrow!

Candice Bray, Sc.D. is an international literacy and learning difficulties specialist based in Maine. Her focus is on learning disabilities and other language processing issues that impact communication and learning. Dr. Bray works with PreK-12 teachers to implement literacy initiatives across the curricula and has been working in the field of education for over 25 years.

Co-sponsored by USM’s Language, Literacy & Culture Program & USM’s Special Education Program

It will be recorded and posted on the Reading Matters to Maine website.  There are 6 previous sessions already archived there with study guides and mastery quizzes, and this session will have the same.

Thank you for considering recording this.  If so, how can we access it?

This looks great. I'm passing it forward to Maine Resilience Building Network and other collaboratives I am part of .

This is a good question Lynn.  I will speak to the event organizer to see if it will be recorded, as they often are.

Thank you for bringing it up.

This is a live event held at USM in the Talbot Lecture Hall in Luther Bonney Hall on the Portland campus on September 27th from 6:30-8:30pm.  This is not a webinar.

Will this be available online - webinar?

I don't believe so Anna, but you can go to the web page and see if there is more information.  But it's open and free to the public so I'm pretty sure there is no preregistration.
